i dunno if this is a good idea or ot...
but say i could put ashley for paper ashley,
Anthony for Develish Anthony,
then when they logged in it it'd say anthony has logged in, and tha'ts how it'd display there username.

No. Some people want to just be what they call themselves here.

It sounds like what he's asking is that it's a personal preference. You could fill in the names of the people in your own profile, it wouldn't be a site wide change. I wouldn't personally use such a feature, but I see nothing wrong with it, either.

Thank you, rain person!
You explained this a lot better then I could. I wasnt sure how to put it. This is exactly what i meant!

hmm, i'm not sure.

why would you want that to start with?

Post 6 by DevilishAnthony (Just go on and agree with me. You know you want to.) on Tuesday, 19-Jun-2012 6:55:17

I guess it's just because I'm here so much, but I can usually keep up with people's names pretty well. I try to make it a point to remember little details about people, so I can follow up with them. For example, when someone mentions publically that they have a doctors appointment, the next time I see them, I try to remember to ask them how it went. It's just a little personal touch, and it seems to go quite a long way. I've had people message me and be totally amazed that I remembered the little details that they've shared, even after they've been away from the zone for a while.

I think people attach far too much importance to peoples' real names. This is the only site I know of where it's almost considered obligatory to divulge your real name to people even if that's not what you want to do.

I do see where you're heading with this suggestion but I don't think it's a good idea, sorry.

i don't really think this is a good idea either.

after thinking about it, here's what I've come up with. On some sites, there's a place for a username and a nickname. If the nickname field was included in account settings as an optional field, users could fill it in, if they wished. There could also be an option to display logged in users by username or nickname. Maybe there could be a third option to display by nickname if available, and if not, display by username. It seems like a lot of work, though, and the coders are busy with their own lives around here, so...

hmmm that sounds rather confusing

Post 11 by OceanDream (An Ocean of Thoughts) on Tuesday, 19-Jun-2012 10:22:03

I honestly don't think it does. A lot of sites have username and nickname, and people can choose whether to view people by username or nickname. In other words, if OceanDream was my username, but I chose to put Jess as my nickname, people could choose to have either Jess or OceanDream displayed when I appear in the login list, boards, ETC. Again, though, I honestly think it would be one of those features that would have to wait until all bugs were fixed, and more highly requested features were added.

I get the idea here, but I don't think it's a very high priority, compared to some other things. And given that JJ and Chris have their own lives and are rarely on the site, don't hold your breath.

Having your real name displayed beside your user name might be helpful, but just having your real name could get confusing. There are a number of people with the same first names, and if more than one Jess or more than one Dan were to be logged on at the same time, how would you know which one you were talking too without seeing there user name too?

Post 14 by OceanDream (An Ocean of Thoughts) on Tuesday, 19-Jun-2012 14:51:33

yeah. that's also a good point.

Post 15 by laced-unlaced (Account disabled) on Tuesday, 19-Jun-2012 15:28:05

hmm, yeah i see the idea, jess.

pretty cool actually

Post 16 by GreenTurtle (Music is life. Love. Vitality.) on Tuesday, 19-Jun-2012 22:39:06

Haha, rain person? I'll keep it. That's the first time anyone ever addressed me that way.

Post 17 by JH_Radio (I've now got the silver prolific poster award! wahoo!) on Wednesday, 20-Jun-2012 20:19:51

well i dunno your name so....
yes, this is what i'm thinking of.
for example on radio-info.com boards, you got your username and your display name.
i've never seen an option ware you can show which you'd like to see logged on by, but i like that idea.
your idea anthony of a username and nickname or display name goes along with what i was thinking, and you probably explained it better then i could.
I try to remember everybody's names also, but sometimes i have trouble. there's lots of people on here.
I take the name thing as a extra personal touch.
Maybe its me, but its that nice little extra something if i can s say Hi Dale, ryan, anthony, jess, etc.
if you say hi flops for instance , isn't that so i dunno, not personal?
i understand some do not wanna be addressed by name. i know of one zoner who gave me a name and asked me to not say so in publics. so i use name only in PQN's .

Post 18 by Siriusly Severus (The ESTJ 1w9 3w4 6w7 The Taskmaste) on Wednesday, 22-Aug-2012 7:33:26

but it doesn't have to be a real name, perhaps a option for viewing
user name
and nickname
if no nickname or username,

then a last option with a edit field atached for personal nickname for that person.

I have a friend on here which I sometimes like to call old man davo. so lets say his user name is david, his nicname, is pizza. or whatever it is, and then say I prefer neither, I can choose the personal nickname that I choose to view and type in old man davo. or for another person gare gare or gary. hahaha!

and, if you really don't want anyone to type in a personal viewing nickname not even if it's only for that said persons eyes, you may disable it.

woah. that sounds confusing.
explain that again ?
